Don’s Hat Rack was conceived in memory of Donald Perrotti, a 22 year old who lost his 6 year battle to Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare bone cancer. The hat rack located in the Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital allows children facing life-threatening diseases to pick hat that represents their vibrant personalities while undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments. The overwhelming response and donations from Don’s family, friends and community allowed Don’s Hat Rack to become something beyond a hat rack.
Don’s Hat Rack hosts an annual motorcycle rally that helped Don’s Hat Rack to expand into two of YNHCH’s satellite clinics, the Smilow Center and Guilford Clinic. The rally provides a constant supply of hats for all locations and helps create “fun centers” that consist of toys, games, televisions, gaming systems, DVD players, etc.
Over the past decade, the rally has grown allowing Don’s Hat Rack to assists families with healthcare expenses, utility bills, food and fulfill holiday wish lists for siblings of the YNHCH patients.
